Cedar Grove kids spread Christmas spirit

Published: 8 Dec 2009 - Trinidad and Tobago Guardian Newspapers - Radhica Sookraj

Pupils of Cedar Grove Private School re-enact the Nativity scene.

Cedar Grove Private School pupils successfully spread the Christmas spirit on Wednesday night, as they held their Christmas musical nativity show, titled Are we Nearly There Yet. The musical, which was adapted from M&H Johnson’s musical, with music by Out of the Arc, featured Latin shepherds who danced in the fields, as they re-enacted the story of Christmas with Mary, Joseph, the wise men and Christmas angels. Each of the nativity characters set out to Bethlehem for the birth of the Christ child. However, the story was given a new twist this year as they were joined by a modern-day family called the Walkers, who also participated in the journey to Bethlehem.

Grades Four and Five introduced the Walker family with their song Its a Long way to Bethlehem, while the Lower KG and Upper KG classes sang Little Donkey. Mary and Joseph were given a send-off by Grades Three and Five, who sang Bye Bye. During the Walker family’s journey, Grades Four and Five sang Are we nearly There Yet, while Grade One drew tumultuous applause with their song Faster than a Rocket. The Wise men also had their share of songs, including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Apart from the songs, the Cedar Grove Ensemble sang the tune Come and Worship while Little Drummer Boy was done by the Cedar Grove Steel Pan Musicians.

Grade Five did a parang medley, which brought the show to a close. Principal Laureen Debance-Misir said the show was sold out. She said the event was centred on child development as everything was done by the pupils. Tickets were designed by a Grade Four pupil. “Our children worked very hard throughout the year, as we tried to instill into them a clear understanding of charity. She said this year, students decided to give monies from their own pockets in order for it to be more meaningful,” Debance-Misir said. She explained that all proceeds from the show will be given to the Lady Hochoy home. The principal also congratulated teachers for their efforts in putting together the performance. She said teachers willingly gave up their lunch hours while football practise was also suspended for some sessions to facilitate the show.
